16 Oct Are Hormone Changes Raising Your Alzheimer’s Risk?
October is Menopause Awareness Month, with October 18th designated as World Menopause Day. After years of neglect, menopause is finally receiving the attention it deserves, empowering women to take control of their menopausal symptoms. Every week, I talk to many women who struggle with symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause. A common complaint is brain fog and concern for brain health through these changes.
Cognitive Decline and Alzheimer’s Disease
Perimenopause often brings memory and focus issues, but when these persist, they could indicate Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). MCI affects around 15-20% of people over 65 and may progress to Alzheimer’s, a form of dementia that impairs memory and independence. Two-thirds of those with Alzheimer’s are women. So, why are women at higher risk?
Why Women Are at Higher Risk?
The hormonal shifts during menopause, particularly the drop in estradiol, increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. Estradiol supports brain health by enhancing glucose metabolism and synaptic plasticity while preventing inflammation and cell death. As estradiol declines, three factors raise the risk of cognitive decline:
- Hypometabolism – Reduced energy production in the brain affects memory-related areas.
- Decreased Brain Volume – Brain shrinkage, particularly in the hippocampus and amygdala, impacts memory and verbal skills.
- Higher Amyloid-Beta Accumulation – Plaques linked to Alzheimer’s are more common in women, especially those with the APOE-ε4 gene.
However, interventions such as regular exercise and resistance training can protect brain health and reduce the impact of estradiol loss.

Have you been hearing the buzz about GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Trulicity? What if I told you that you can achieve similar effects naturally?
GLP-1s, or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, are commonly prescribed to manage type 2 diabetes and obesity. These medications imitate GLP-1, a hormone that helps control blood sugar, curbs appetite, and slows digestion.
However, by focusing on foods that naturally boost GLP-1 activity, you can experience many of these benefits—whether you’re on medication or not.
My new GLP-1 Support Recipe Collection is designed to help you optimize your health by emphasizing protein-rich foods, healthy fats, fiber, and whole, nutrient-dense ingredients. Prioritizing protein, in particular, is key for building a stronger body and supporting lasting results!

The Healthspan Assessment Panel assesses key markers of cardiovascular (heart & blood vessels), endocrine (hormone), hepatic (liver), renal (kidney), immune, and metabolic health, along with markers of inflammation, autoimmunity, and nutrient status. By assessing various body systems, this comprehensive approach helps determine overall health and wellness and position you for optimal health and longevity.
Why is This Test Important?
- Gathering baseline data and retesting allows you to measure how a diet, supplement, exercise, or lifestyle program impacts your health and determine its effectiveness.
- Providers commonly order this particular group of markers to gather holistic data about their clients’ overall health status.
- The panel assesses various indicators of health, detects potential imbalances or abnormalities, and guides further diagnostic and treatment decisions.
- It is especially useful in preventive medicine, managing chronic conditions, and investigating complex health issues
