10 Oct Can’t focus? Try these simple changes!
Since the start of the pandemic, I’ve had a major influx of new clients specifically looking for practitioners who specialize in brain health. My weekends are usually spent taking a deeper dive into the science of neuroplasticity and its connection to improving the ability to focus and solve the problem of chronic mental fatigue. Through this journey, I discovered just how influential certain foods and lifestyle habits can be. The brain is a complex organ, constantly changing and adapting through a process known as neuroplasticity. This process is fundamental to how we learn, form memories, and maintain mental health. But many people don’t realize that we can enhance neuroplasticity through our daily choices—especially through diet and lifestyle!
The Role of Omega-3sOne of the most significant discoveries I made was the importance of omega-3 fatty acids. These anti-inflammatory fats, found in fatty fish like salmon or in plant-based sources such as flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp, and walnuts, are essential for brain health. I worked with my client to integrate omega-3-rich foods into her diet—one fun way was through morning muffins loaded with flax, chia, and walnuts. Not only were they delicious and convenient on the go, but they also became a brain-boosting start to the day. Sleep and Brain HealthQuality sleep is another crucial factor in supporting neuroplasticity. Research shows that sleep deprivation affects how we process food rewards and often leads to unhealthy food choices. Prioritizing sleep not only helps with mood and overall brain function but also plays a role in weight management and making better dietary decisions. Movement MattersPhysical activity is perhaps one of the most powerful tools for promoting brain health. Exercise increases blood flow, oxygenation, and glucose delivery to the brain, which helps enhance cognitive function. More importantly, movement stimulates the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule that promotes the growth of new brain cells, known as neurogenesis. Regular exercise also reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and even depression. Empowering Your Brain’s PotentialNeuroplasticity gives us the empowering ability to shape and strengthen our brains at any age. Through conscious decisions—whether it’s incorporating omega-3s into your diet, getting enough sleep, or staying active—we can actively improve our brain health and prevent cognitive decline. By making these choices, you can build not just stronger muscles but a stronger, more resilient brain. It’s never too late to start! Are You Ready to Make a Change? My client wanted actionable steps that wouldn’t be overwhelming – which was why starting with simple steps like adding Omega-3s and more physical activity was a natural way to ease her into making bigger, lasting changes down the road. The Neural Zoomer Plus measures immune reactivity to structures, tissues, cells, and chemicals in the brain and peripheral nervous system. This test can detect underlying inflammatory responses that may be causing symptoms related to mood, memory, aging, balance, nervous function, movement, pain, and more. If you were diagnosed with or suspect neurological inflammation or autoimmune disease, you may benefit from this panel.
