Mindset Mastery: Silence The Inner Critic

Mindset Mastery: Silence The Inner Critic

This weekend I received a call from my daughter that made me stop still in my tracks. I could hear the sadness and disappointment in her voice as she relayed what was on her mind. The long and short of it was simple: at this new stage in her life (almost 30) she’s having a hard time finding new friends.

With her high school days long gone she’s at the stage where friendship takes on new meaning. Now it’s all about having like-minded community, common values, shared interests and aligned goals.

What isn’t long gone are the hurtful memories of teasing, bullying, and downright meanness that she experienced from girls she thought were friends. Wrapped in those experiences was also her first love and first breakup which, like for most of us, sent her into an emotional tailspin and feelings of unworthiness.

In a nutshell, our conversation was about managing difficult emotions which one of my favorite teachers, Dr. Tara Brach, says is “the fertile ground for waking up.”

To help my daughter I reached for my well worn copy of Dr. Tara’s most recent book, Radical Compassion, and shared the following excerpt with her, emphasizing my favorite quote in the book.

Dr. Tara writes “And when I get stuck in painful emotions, it brings me to a repeating realization, an insight that has profoundly changed my life: I have to love myself into healing. The only path that can carry me home is the path of self-compassion.”

Dr. Tara doesn’t just stop there. She suggests that the healing medicine always entails a level of kindness, care, compassion and forgiveness all directed first and foremost towards ourselves.

Radical compassion, she writes, is an act of courage to deeply love ourselves.

What I want you to remember this week Reader is that healing painful memories is a process that never really ends.

Some days those memories will be as fresh in your mind as yesterday and some days you will barely be able to recall the details.

Some days those memories will stop you in your tracks and some days they will be the wind that propels you forward.

Either way, and at any given moment, you have the power to decide that your wounds aren’t going to stop you from becoming the person you want to be.

You see, your mind can be your very best friend and also your worst enemy.

Childhood memories of feeling deficient and disconnected, silenced and shunned, shamed and victimized can lead to the kind of self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviors that hold you back from creating the life you truly deserve.

Learning how to recognize and silence the voice of your mental saboteurs while awakening the compassionate voice of care, compassion, empathy and self love is the gateway to living true to yourself at peak potential.

I Want To Uncover My Mental Saboteurs

Mindset Mastery Action Step:

A common trait of highly successful people is that they commit to having time in their schedules to pinpoint exactly where the weaker links are in their processes – including their own self-sabotaging beliefs, thoughts, habits and daily routines.

Successful people realize the value in having a lifeline in moments when they’re feeling stressed, fearful, reactive and confused. This lifeline, when activated again and again, is what helps them build internal resilience and trust in their own wise, awakened heart.

This level of clarity and mental mastery is what helps them respond to life in a way that expresses the truth and depth and spirit of who they truly are and is the gift that allows them to live to their full potential.

Use the following journal prompt to explore how the Saboteur’s Voice is likely showing up in your life:

  1. Think of a recent situation where you felt overwhelmed, doubted yourself, or avoided taking action. Describe the experience in detail: What was the main feeling that surfaced? How did the inner voice of your mental saboteur (e.g., hyper-rationalization, avoidance, hypervigilance, feeling like a victim) sound? What did it tell you, and how did it impact your decision-making or behavior?
  2. Next, consider: If you were to learn how to reframe and manage these emotions to quiet this voice permanently, what impact could that have on your health, career, relationships, or well-being? What would be possible for you and how would it change your life?
