18 Nov Mindset Mastery: Handle Hard Better
When was the last time something you truly wanted just fell into your lap without any effort at all? Chances are, your answer is never. That’s because magic and fairy tale endings only exist on the big screen.
Our 40s and 50s often spark a deep longing for true change—whether it’s better health, more fulfilling careers, or a sense of inner peace. We dream of these transformations, but it’s human nature to hope they come effortlessly. After all, wouldn’t it be nice if the life we want just appeared, without struggle or discomfort?
In today’s fast-paced, supersized, drive-through world, it’s common to feel frustrated and give up on our dreams. Everything around us makes success look quick and easy. Social media, far from being truly social, often feels like a never-ending loop of advertisements, envy, and comparisons, making us question whether we’re measuring up.
But here’s what I want you to remember: What comes easy won’t last, and what lasts won’t come easy.
Why Easy Isn’t Sustainable
.
The problem with “easy” is that it always comes with a hidden cost. While it might feel satisfying in the short term—like choosing the path of least resistance or avoiding a challenging decision—it ultimately robs you of the opportunity to grow. True growth requires discomfort. It’s in the effort, struggle, and even occasional failure that we build the resilience, strength, and discipline needed for meaningful, lasting change.
When you choose “easy,” you may avoid immediate stress or discomfort, but the trade-off is ultimately stagnation. You remain stuck in the same patterns, replaying the same frustrations over and over.
Those shortcuts you take or decisions you avoid? They often lead to dead ends, forcing you to start again without having made real progress.
Worse yet, the habit of choosing “easy” reinforces itself. Each time you avoid effort, you teach yourself that the harder path isn’t worth it—that it’s better to settle for less, delay your goals, or abandon your dreams altogether. Over time, this erodes your confidence and keeps you from stepping into the person you’re meant to become.
We don’t need easy. What we need is the ability to handle hard better.

The Power of Effort
.
What I learned by going back to college in my 30s and starting a business in my 40s is how important it is to get off The Easy Bus. Lasting change came when I decided I was willing to step into discomfort and embrace the difficult. It’s only in the effort—the sweat, the setbacks, and the small daily choices—that transformation happens.
Want better health? It’s the effort of meal planning, moving your body, and saying no to quick fixes.
Yearning for a more fulfilling career? It’s the courage to have honest conversations, set boundaries that protect your time and energy, and show up authentically in your work.
Seeking more peace? It’s the practice of quieting your inner critic and prioritizing self-care, even when it feels indulgent.
When you commit to doing the hard work, you not only achieve your goals but also build the skills and mindset to maintain them.
You become someone who can weather life’s challenges, adapt to change, and keep growing stronger, no matter what comes your way. And that kind of transformation? It’s worth every ounce of effort.
The Question to Ask Yourself
.
Anything worth having—a healthier body, a fulfilling career, inner peace—requires effort. It demands consistency and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. In my case it required sacrifice—student loans, twelve hour night shifts, and weekends away from my kids.
As you reflect on this week’s quote, consider this: What’s one area of your life where you’ve been hoping for easy answers? And what effort are you willing to invest, what difficulty are you willing to endure to create something that lasts?
