17 Apr Your vitamin questions – answered!
Your weekly housecall filled with everything you need to know to live longer and live better—naturally. Missed an issue or want to forward to a friend? Find it all right here. Hey there, friend! At the start of each season, I re-evaluate my supplementation routine. What my body needs in the winter months is often different than what I need during the summer. Have you ever wondered about the difference between a supplement routine of multivitamins versus individual vitamins and minerals? What exactly are the perks of popping a multivitamin, and is it better than taking several separate vitamin and/or mineral supplements? Benefits of Multivitamins Multivitamins serve as a boost to your nutrient foundation. Given the nuances of your daily diet and lifestyle, you might lack essential nutrients you didn’t even know you were missing! A multivitamin bridges these gaps. Additionally, it mirrors the way we naturally get nutrients through our meals. If you have dietary restrictions or intolerances preventing access to certain nutrients, multivitamins are a great way to support these deficiencies. Multivitamins are also just easier! Juggling multiple individual vitamin and mineral capsules can be challenging, and lugging around a weekly organizer might not be practical. Multivitamins streamline complexity into convenience, bundling essential nutrients into one. One size does not fit all, and multivitamins are created to address specific needs. From children to adults, men to women, and pregnant/nursing mothers, there’s a multivitamin formulation tailored to many unique requirements.
So, are multivitamins superior to individual vitamins? While multivitamins offer foundational nutritional support, they may not cater to individual deficiencies stemming from lifestyle and life stage factors. For instance, individuals with limited sun exposure or residing in northern regions are predisposed to vitamin D deficiencies. Timing is another crucial factor. Certain vitamins and minerals compete for absorption when ingested simultaneously in high doses. Spacing out supplements throughout the day allows for optimal absorption. For example, excessive zinc intake can hinder copper absorption. My doctor says you get all of your nutrients from your food and you don’t need a vitamin. Is that true? I really wish it was true. Years ago, all of our food was grown, harvested, and sold right in our own communities. Our local farmers tilled the soil and filled it with healthy compost and nutrients. But those days are gone. Most of our food is grown and harvested thousands of miles away, loaded into boxes, and shipped on refrigerated trucks to preserve their shape, texture, and color. By the time it arrives on your local food store shelf, it has likely been depleted of most (if not all) of it’s nutrients! Which is right for me? Well…it depends! Everyone has unique health and lifestyle needs. I always advocate for consulting with a healthcare professional to figure out what is best for you. Generally, multivitamins offer a holistic approach, plugging nutrient gaps in your diet. However, individual supplements might be preferable for addressing specific health concerns. News You Can Use: Women Who Do Strength Training Live Longer

Resistance training does more than help us build strong muscles.
A new study finds women who do strength training exercises two to three days a week are more likely to live longer and have a lower risk of death from heart disease, compared to women who do none.
Strength training is also good for bones, joints, mood, and metabolic health. And at a time when many women focus on aerobic activity and hesitate to do weight training, the findings add to the evidence that a combination of both types of exercise is powerful medicine.
Women who did moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, five times a week, reduced their risk of premature death by 24%, compared to 18% for men.
