Hey there, friend!

I am a plant lover through and through. Not much makes me feel more at peace than sinking my fingers into the earth or feeling the grass beneath my toes on warmer days. Last month, I spent some time repotting a few of my plants. Houseplants offer an accessible way to breathe life into empty, lifeless spaces, with the added thrill of witnessing their growth and development.

Research studies have highlighted the positive impact of plants on our well-being, too. Nurturing plants can bring holistic wellness into your life, providing a source of peace in what is often a chaotic and busy world.

There are six scientifically-backed benefits of houseplants:

  1. Stress Reduction: Research suggests that indoor plants have the remarkable ability to reduce both physiological and psychological stress. Studies have shown that being around plants can lower heart rate and blood pressure, promoting a sense of calmness and comfort. Even simply viewing images of plants has been linked to decreased stress levels, as evidenced by studies conducted in hospital waiting rooms.
  2. Improved Concentration: Visible greenery has been found to enhance concentration levels, particularly among children. Classrooms containing real plants have been associated with improved attention and performance in selective attention tests, emphasizing the cognitive benefits of incorporating green elements into indoor environments.
  3. Enhanced Healing: The presence of plants may speed up the recovery process for individuals undergoing illness, injury, or surgery. Hospitalized patients with a view of plants or trees reportedly exhibited greater calmness and achieved better clinical outcomes, including reduced reliance on pain medication and shorter hospital stays.
  4. Increased Happiness: The notion that “plants make people happy” is true! Research supports elevated levels of comfort and positive emotions in environments with plants. Exposure to greenery is also correlated with heightened self-esteem and overall life satisfaction.
  5. Boosted Productivity: Studies indicate that the introduction of plants into indoor spaces can lead to increased productivity. From college students working faster in plant-adorned computer labs to office workers making more calls per hour with a view of plants, green elements have been shown to positively influence performance.
  6. Improved Mental Well-being: Houseplants often are a source of peace, offering relief from symptoms of depression and anxiety. Greenery in the home environment provides a sense of escape, contributing to overall mental well-being.

Getting Started with Houseplants

Transitioning from a “black thumb” to a “green thumb” is achievable for anyone interested in getting started with houseplants. Begin by consulting local garden shops for guidance on selecting plants suited to your living space and lifestyle. Remember, successful plant care lies in finding the balance between adequate attention and avoiding overzealous care. For beginners, resilient options like snake plants or growing microgreens can be excellent starting points.

Incorporating houseplants into my daily routines, such as a simple watering schedule, offers a simple yet impactful way to cultivate joy, tranquility, and connection with nature – making the ordinary extraordinary through these tiny rituals.
