26 Jun Should you be worried about PFAS? Here’s what to know.
Your weekly housecall filled with everything you need to know to live longer and live better—naturally. Missed an issue or want to forward to a friend? Find it all right here. Hello there, friend! Have you ever been told by past healthcare providers you’re “fine” even though you don’t feel fine? This is something I hear from many of my clients when they speak about their prior experiences before coming to me. One of the services I provide – even virtually – is functional nutrition and lab testing. These tests are crucial if you want to get to the root cause of your symptoms and address why you’re really not feeling fine. This year I’ve been keeping close tabs on the news reports about PFAS. PFAS, or per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, aren’t just one chemical but thousands used in various industrial processes, often making products slick, nonstick, or waterproof. These substances, known as “forever chemicals,” are incredibly difficult to break down, persisting in the environment and human bodies for extended periods. For decades, companies dumped PFAS into the environment, contaminating rivers, aquifers, and, consequently, drinking water in many parts of the US. Additionally, consumer products release these chemicals into our homes and food, leading experts to believe that most people have some level of PFAS in their bodies. In early April, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set the first national limits for six PFAS chemicals in drinking water, giving water suppliers five years to comply. Numerous PFAS chemicals are released into the environment under trade secrecy protections. This means that understanding and managing environmental risks largely falls on individuals and healthcare providers, despite it being a systemic issue. Here’s what you need to know about assessing your PFAS exposure risk and working with your healthcare provider to mitigate any potential health impacts.
Do I need to worry about PFAS? High levels of PFAS are linked to various health problems, including high cholesterol, certain cancers, and immune system disorders. Even low levels of PFAS in the blood can be concerning. To assess your PFAS risk, start by checking the safety of your drinking water. High PFAS levels are typically due to frequent consumption of contaminated water or prolonged workplace exposure. Information on PFAS levels in drinking water is not always easy to obtain. While the Environmental Working Group offers a map of PFAS levels in tap water across the US, the data can be incomplete. Contacting your local water supplier is often the best way to get specific information. For those using private wells, testing is necessary to determine PFAS levels.
Next, get tested to find out your total toxins burden. Break free from the chains of toxin accumulation! From heavy metals to mold toxins, discover what’s lurking within you. Our Total Tox Burden test is your key to a personalized detox and wellness journey. What can everyone do to prevent PFAS exposure? While avoiding PFAS entirely is nearly impossible, you can reduce your exposure by filtering your drinking water using reverse osmosis or carbon filters. Avoiding products treated with waterproofing and stain-resistant chemicals, and minimizing the consumption of food from nonstick containers can also help. Hormones. These chemical messengers hold the power to regulate mood, energy levels, sleep, appetite and libido — but changes in oral health, too? “It’s true,” exclaimed Maiara Hister-Cockrell, DDS, an associate professor/clinical at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Dentistry. “From puberty to menopause, a woman’s entire body, including [her] mouth, is impacted by the rise and fall of hormones,” she said. The surge of growth and reproductive hormones that accompany certain life stages increase the flow of blood to multiple body sites including the gums. Hister-Cockrell said this increase of blood, estrogen and progesterone alters the response of gum tissue to bacteria that accumulate around teeth and under the gumline.
