Hello there, friend!

At Seva Health, we believe that true brain health begins with a holistic approach to wellness. Today, we’re seeing a rise in brain diseases, including a shocking increase in early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease in people who are only in their mid-40s! Key elements such as thoughts, beliefs, nutrition, relationships, and sleep are all essential for optimal cognitive function and overall well-being. Let’s take a quick dive into each.

Thoughts and Beliefs: Our thoughts and beliefs significantly affect our mental and physical health. Just think about how mentally exhausted you feel just thinking about having a Zoom meeting with an argumentative co-worker! Negative thought patterns and limiting beliefs can lead to stress, anxiety, and even physical illnesses. Conversely, cultivating a growth mindset, practicing gratitude, and engaging in mindfulness can enhance resilience, emotional well-being, and brain health. Happiness is not just a reflection of mental health or an end goal; it’s the ability to grow through challenges, embrace resilience, increase joy, and change our perception of experiences. This process starts with self-awareness of the thoughts and beliefs that shape our behaviors and responses.

Nutrition: Fueling the Brain: The foods we eat are crucial for brain function. A diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, healthy fats rich in omega-3 fatty acids, colorful vegetables, moderate whole grains, and high-quality proteins provides the essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants our brains need. In contrast, a diet high in processed and inflammatory foods can lead to cognitive decline and a higher risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

Relationships: Nurturing Connections: As social beings, our relationships greatly influence our well-being. Strong, supportive relationships provide a sense of purpose, belonging, and emotional fulfillment, all contributing to brain health. On the other hand, social isolation and loneliness are linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline and mental health issues.

Sleep: Recharging the Mind: Sleep is vital for brain health and function. During sleep, our brains consolidate memories, clear out metabolic waste, and repair and regenerate cells. Chronic sleep deprivation or poor sleep quality can negatively impact cognitive function, mood, and overall brain health.

What I want you to remember this week Reader is this: there is an intricate connection between mind, body, and relationships. At Seva Health our approach to brain health is comprehensive, addressing all these interconnected aspects. By nurturing our thoughts, beliefs, nutrition, relationships, and sleep, we can build a strong foundation for optimal cognitive function and overall well-being.

Do you struggle with low energy or have difficulty focusing?

Poor methylation may be the problem.

Methylation (pronounced MEH-thuh-LAY-shun) is a chemical reaction in the body in which a small molecule called a methyl group gets added to DNA, proteins, or other molecules. The addition of methyl groups can affect how some molecules act in the body.

Methylation has many roles in the body, including:

  • Gene regulation: Methylation turns genes on and off.
  • DNA repair: Methylation helps repair DNA.
  • Nutrient conversions: Methylation affects nutrient conversions through enzyme interactions.
  • Neurotransmitter production: Methylation helps produce neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline, norepinephrine, and melatonin. For example, methylation converts tryptophan to 5-HTP, which is a precursor to serotonin. It also converts norepinephrine to adrenaline, which is important for focus and attention.
  • Homocysteine recycling: Methylation recycles the amino acid homocysteine to keep its levels in a healthy range

Methylation pathways have significant overlap with virtually all organ systems and metabolic functions in the human body, and can impact health, energy, detoxification, emotional and psychological function, and cognition.

Key nutrients play a role in methylation, and without optimal levels of these nutrients in the correct form, methylation can become impaired and dysfunctional, leading to illness, disease, and affecting quality of life. A genetic abnormality of one or more genes related to methylation can cause methylation cycles to become dysfunctional.

The Vibrant Methylation panel tests for the key nutrients required in methylation as well as genetic markers to indicate any abnormalities. This includes:

  • Levels of homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12 — key biomarkers involved in methylation
  • Single nucleotide polymorphisms — genetic variations that can affect methylations

The Methylation panel assesses your methylation status and unique genetic nutritional needs so you can make effective, appropriate lifestyle changes.

Health Research + News You Can Use

The brain makes a lot of waste. Now scientists think they know where it goes.

About 170 billion cells are in the brain, and as they go about their regular tasks, they produce waste — a lot of it. To stay healthy, the brain needs to wash away all that debris. But how exactly it does this has remained a mystery.

Now, two teams of scientists have published three papers that offer a detailed description of the brain’s waste-removal system. Their insights could help researchers better understand, treat and perhaps prevent a broad range of brain disorders.
