27 May Mindset Mastery: Yes You Can
Hello friend, I have to be honest with you, there are days that I feel like throwing in the towel. Corporate equity firms have taken over healthcare in ways that many people don’t understand. It’s hard to find a doctor who has time to truly listen to your health concerns. It’s even harder to get emergency care in the emergency room because they’re filled with people who don’t have access to good primary, prevention-focused care. With each passing year it seems there are more ‘influencers’ than there are educators. The internet is overrun with fanatical fads, pseudoscience, expensive drugs and just downright dangerous advice. Last week I was talking to a nurse practitioner friend who agreed. She said, “Some days it really does feel like an uphill battle doesn’t it? There’s got to be a better way.” After tossing around a few potential lottery numbers and laughing about the poor statistical likelihood that either of us would actually win, my friend helped me come to the conclusion that there is a better way: working smarter, not harder by doing more of what I love and what I do best.
What I’ve learned in my 30 years of clinical practice is that education is the foundation of good healthcare. When we know better we can do better, it’s just that simple. When we understand how our bodies function we can overcome cravings, energy crashes and bad eating habits and start falling in love with good food that is actually nourishing. When we understand that our bodies are designed to move we can overcome the pain, stiffness, and poor blood flow that leads to so many preventable diseases. When we understand the collective power that can be gained in community, that we are stronger together than we are apart, we can set realistic goals and get the support we need to awaken our greatest strengths. Knowledge is truly power.
For Your Practice: It’s normal to feel like giving up on your goals from time to time. Gaining knowledge about your strengths, weaknesses and blind spots can help you overcome that feeling. Here are a few journal prompts to help you rekindle your spark and get motivated again. 1: Reflecting on Past Achievements Take a moment to reflect on three significant achievements or milestones in your life. What were the key factors that contributed to these successes? How did you feel during these times? Now, think about how continuing to educate yourself could help you replicate or build on these past achievements. Write about what new skills or knowledge you would like to acquire and how they might help you achieve your current goals. 2: Envisioning the Future Imagine your life five years from now if you fully commit to lifelong learning and self-improvement. What does your ideal day look like? What are you doing, who are you with, and how do you feel? Describe this vision in detail. Then, consider the steps you need to take to get there. What specific educational goals can you set for yourself now to help bring this vision to reality? 3: Overcoming Obstacles and Embracing Growth Identify a challenge or obstacle you have faced in the past year that has made you feel stuck or unmotivated. Reflect on how gaining new knowledge or skills might help you overcome this obstacle. Write about one or two areas of education or personal development that excite you and could provide you with the tools or mindset to overcome future challenges. How will embracing these new learning opportunities impact your overall well-being and sense of purpose? Remember that when it comes to your personal journal practice you don’t need perfect sentences nor perfect punctuation. You can scribble, erase, cross out and be as messy as you’d like. Your journal is for you. LET’S GO DEEPER If you are feeling stuck or stalled on your life goals or just feel like throwing in the towel, what I hope you will remember this week is how important it is to find a like-minded tribe who believes in you so ferociously that on the days you feel like you can’t, will remind you that you can. I hope this is the year you give yourself the gift of true wellness by slowing down long enough to feel a body that is rested, renewed, and refreshed so that you can start doing more of what you love and what you do best.
