Mindset Mastery: Know Your Worth

Mindset Mastery: Know Your Worth

A few years ago, I was sitting in an airport restaurant waiting for a connecting flight back home. A country song titled What’s A Girl Like You Doing In A Place Like This? came over the restaurant radio as I was waiting for my order. At first I paid little attention to it and then after a few minutes I put the title in Google to find out more.

It turns out that the song was written and sung by Jim Ed Brown, published in 1968 on his album, This Is My Beat.

In just two minutes and ten seconds, Brown sings these short verses:

What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?
Oh what a pretty face in such a dirty place, what in the world are you doing here?
You try to act like you belong but I know you’re just puttin’ on
What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?

What’s a girl like you wasting your time for?
In a place that only brings disgrace and shame
What’s a girl like you wasting your life for…what went wrong, who is to blame?

You play the jukebox all night long…you try to act like you belong
But your eyes tell me you’re a million miles away

So if I ask just once again it’s because I don’t understand
What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?
What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?

If you’re anything like me I’ll bet that at some point in your life you’ve asked yourself the same question: what am I doing in a place (or situation) like this?

What I want you to remember this week, Reader is that power and worth go hand in hand.

Knowing your worth is what gives you the power to start making life happen for you, not to you.

When you know the power of your words, you choose them carefully and you won’t just say anything.

When you know the power of your thoughts, you choose them intentionally and you won’t just think or believe anything.

When you know the power of your presence, you choose where you belong and you won’t just be anywhere.

This week I want you to choose words, thoughts, people, and places that are a reflection of your true worth.

This week I want you to remember one simple thing:

You have the power to choose, which means you have the power to change.

Not feeling fulfilled in your career? Invest your time and energy in learning new skills.

Not feeling valued in your relationships? Invest your time and energy in meeting new people.

Not feeling confident about the next stage of your life? Invest your time and energy in getting clear.

For Your Journal Practice: Reclaiming Your Worth

  1. The Power of Your Words: Reflect on a time when your words had a significant impact on your work or personal life. How did your choice of words affect the outcome of the situation? What could you have said differently to create a more positive result? Consider how you can be more mindful of your language to better support your goals and relationships.

2. The Power of Your Thoughts: Think about a recurring negative thought that often sabotages your confidence and performance. Describe how this thought influences your actions and decisions. What would change if you replaced this negative thought with a positive, empowering one? Write about the potential outcomes and how this shift in mindset could enhance your happiness and effectiveness.

3. The Power of Your Presence: Reflect on a recent situation where you felt out of place or disconnected. How did being in that environment affect your emotions and behavior? Now, imagine being in a space where you feel fully present, valued, and aligned with your purpose. Describe the differences in how you think, feel, and act in these two scenarios. How can you cultivate more intentional presence in your daily life to support your well-being and success?
