31 Mar Mindset Mastery: Balance Over Excess
Have you ever noticed the tipping point between too much and not enough? I’m learning that it’s a really fine line. Let me share a quick story…
Last week my husband and I went out to dinner at a cute little restaurant that serves my favorite Mediterranean bowls. I love bowls because of their variety and simplicity. It’s amazing how much nutrition you can pack into one small space and still achieve so much mouth-watering flavor. Another benefit? Portion control. Bowls are a very easy way to control not only what we eat but how much we eat, too.
As the hostess added the ingredients to my bowl, I noticed that there was too little of my favorite ingredient: pickled onions. I asked if she could add just a little bit more. She added not just one spoonful but two. As you can imagine with pickled onions, too much changed the entire flavor of my bowl.
This small moment got me thinking about balance—how we often crave more of something, believing it will enhance our experience, only to realize that too much can throw everything off. Whether it’s food, work, relationships, or even self-care, there’s a fine line between just enough and overwhelming excess.
When Too Much Is Really Too Much: The Overload Effect
In life, we often believe that more is better. More success, more experiences, more commitment, more social media connections. more productivity. But at what point does “more” become “too much”?
Take work, for example. Many professionals strive for excellence and advancement, pouring in extra hours, taking on more responsibilities, and stretching themselves thin in the name of progress. But when work takes over personal life, leading to burnout and exhaustion, the once-fulfilling career turns into a burden.
Or consider relationships. It’s natural to want to nurture the people we care about, to show up for them, support them, and be present. But when we overextend ourselves, saying “yes” to every request, absorbing the emotional weight of others, and neglecting our own needs, we risk losing our sense of self in the process.
Even in self-care, something meant to restore and rejuvenate, excess can be counterproductive. Overindulging in relaxation without structure can lead to complacency. Overanalyzing every health trend or diet shift can create stress rather than relief. The key isn’t just in the practice—it’s in the balance.
How to Recognize When It’s Too Much
No matter what, too much is too much and it creates the kind of clutter that leads to overwhelm in our lives.
Sometimes, we don’t realize we’ve crossed the line until the imbalance starts affecting our well-being. Here are a few signs that too much is…too much:
- You feel overwhelmed, rather than fulfilled – What once brought you joy or satisfaction now feels like an obligation or burden.
- You’re experiencing decision fatigue – Small choices become difficult because your mental load is maxed out.
- Your energy is consistently drained – Instead of feeling motivated, you feel depleted and stretched too thin.
- You’re neglecting other important aspects of life – Your health, relationships, or personal goals are suffering due to overcommitment in one area.
- You feel resentment creeping in – Instead of appreciation, you find yourself frustrated, irritated, or emotionally exhausted.
Mindset Mastery Action Step: Finding the Right Balance
Life is a delicate recipe, and just like that bowl of food, every ingredient needs to be in harmony. Here’s how you can regain balance when too much becomes overwhelming:
- Pause and Assess – Take a step back and evaluate what’s currently consuming your time, energy, and emotions. Where do you feel out of alignment?
- Establish Boundaries – Learn to say no. Protect your time and energy so that you can show up fully where it matters most.
- Practice Moderation – More isn’t always better. Sometimes, scaling back allows for greater enjoyment and appreciation of what you have.
- Listen to Your Body and Mind – If you’re constantly feeling drained, your body is signaling that something needs to shift.
- Prioritize What Truly Matters – Focus on the things that bring value and meaning to your life, and let go of the excess noise.
