10 Jan Low on iodine? Test don’t guess!
Your weekly housecall filled with everything you need to know to live longer and live better—naturally. Missed an issue or want to forward to a friend? Find it all right here.
Hey there, friend!
If I could sum up why I share my passion for lifestyle medicine with others in one sentence, it would be this:
It’s easier to support wellness than it is to treat illness.
Embracing lifestyle medicine offers a unique advantage – the luxury of time to dive deep into the health concerns of my clients. Unlike conventional healthcare constrained by time limitations, we proactively conduct comprehensive bloodwork, explore family histories, and address aging-related concerns.
Prioritizing preventive care is often challenging, but it is far simpler than dealing with the aftermath:
- Preventing burnout is easier than treating it, just as addressing a ‘low end of normal iron level’ is more manageable than combating full-blown anemia.
- Tackling blood sugar issues or mild insulin resistance is vastly more straightforward when compared to the complexities of pre-diabetes.
- The ease of building lean muscle mass is most pronounced in youth, just as maintaining and building bone density before menopause trumps the challenges of managing osteoporosis afterward.
- Taking charge of heart disease risks through dietary and lifestyle changes is effective, but assessing factors like cholesterol, activity, and blood pressure from an earlier age provides a crucial opportunity for support.
- Chronic pain, once established, becomes increasingly challenging to manage.

Getting screened for health issues like breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colon cancer is an important way to catch problems early when they are more easily treatable. These tests are like proactive steps you can take to stay healthy even when you feel fine. They might not seem important when you’re busy, but they can help you avoid bigger health problems down the road.
The challenge lies in recognizing the long-term benefits of these practices, especially when feeling well or facing time constraints. My goal is to empower you to feel your best for years to come. Remember, neglecting wellness may eventually demand time for illness. Making room for health today is an investment in a vibrant and enduring future!

Keep Your Eye On Iodine
|
Although severe iodine deficiency is now rare, attention has shifted to the effects of mild to moderate iodine deficiency on health and the consequences of excessive iodine intakes.
Did you know that even a mild iodine deficiency can cause your thyroid (the master regulator in your body) to function improperly?
The micronutrient iodine is essential for thyroid function. Iodine is a constituent of the thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) which control metabolism, growth and development [2].
If you’re feeling sluggish, tired, low on energy and unmotivated it might be a good idea to check up your thyroid hormones and get a full nutrient profile to be sure that what’s on your plate is helping your health!

Do you struggle to have a sense of calm, even with your current diet and supplement regimen? Most relaxation and sleep supplements can drain us of the energy that we need during the busy day. In a randomized, double-blind study, 5-HTP was shown to significantly improve mood. Serotonin, known for regulating mood and sleep-wake functioning, needs the active forms of vitamin B6, folate, and vitamin C to synthesize.
Many calming supplements contain melatonin, which can leave you feeling groggy. Serene supports a sense of calm – day or night – without draining your energy during the day. Serene contains:
- 5-HTP (from Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract)
- Vitamin B6
- Folate
- Vitamin C
