26 Jul Just a little brain fog? Or could it be dementia?
Hello friend, Welcome to the very first issue of Build A Better Brain, a special spin-off of my weekly newsletter, Healthy Housecalls With Angel dedicated to the one thing we all need more of: tools to create a healthier brain. Why? Because you’ve been asking for it. But first, allow me to share a bit of back story… Thirty years ago, at the start of my career, I was passionate about critical care medicine. From car accidents to cardiac arrests, every twelve hour night shift in the ER and ICU was fueled by the sheer adrenaline of saving lives. Heart-lung medicine and assisting with emergency procedures was my lifeblood and it brought an incredible amount of fulfillment. But after twenty years in ICU ‘Go Mode’ I knew it was time to get out in the community to not only save lives but improve the quality of life. So, I dusted off my duffle bag and went to graduate school to become a nurse practitioner and help prevent the very things that landed so many in the hospital in the first place. But shortly after opening my own practice, I found myself immersed in a different kind of ‘critical care’ – Alzheimer’s disease and dementia – a debilitating disease that impacts not only the patient but their entire family. Since opening my practice in 2013, I’ve witnessed an alarming increase in early onset brain diseases even in my own practice. New statistics in this recent article caught my eye: in 2020 early-onset dementia and Alzheimer’s diagnoses spiked 373% for Generation X and Millennials as early as the mid-40s. Even worse, when Alzheimer’s begins in mid-life as menopausal hormonal changes are also happening misdiagnosis may be more likely. Alzheimer’s is NOT ‘just an old person’s disease’ and sometimes it isn’t ‘just a little brain fog.’ Brain disease at any age can cause anxiety, depression, financial loss and a severe reduction in quality of life for both the patient and their families. I want to change that…for all of us. BUILD A BETTER BRAIN TODAY
