27 Mar “B-Vitality: Unlocking Memory, Mood & Menopause Support
Your weekly housecall filled with everything you need to know to live longer and live better—naturally. Missed an issue or want to forward to a friend? Find it all right here. Hey there, friend! Lately, I’ve been spending time evaluating my supplement plan and deciding what my body is telling me I may need. Our bodies speak to us and tell us what might be missing in our nutritional intake. For example, chronic fatigue can be a sign of an iron deficiency. One supplement I always want to ensure I’m getting enough of is B vitamins. There are 12 different B vitamins, and they extend beyond their traditional roles in energy production and cellular function; they also play a vital role in shaping the gut microbiome. The gut microbiome, a complex ecosystem of microorganisms living in our digestive tract, is influenced by B vitamins in two main ways: directly, through their action on microbial composition and activity, and indirectly, through changes in gut physiology. It’s important to maintain optimal B vitamin levels for gut health. Each B vitamin contributes uniquely to the gut microbiome. For instance, thiamin supports intestinal integrity and immunometabolism, while riboflavin is crucial for early GI tract development. Niacin, biotin, and pantothenic acid contribute to cellular energy production and the maintenance of gut epithelial cells. Folate and vitamin B12 are essential for various metabolic reactions and intestinal barrier function. Factors such as antibiotic use, diet, and genetics can disrupt B vitamin levels in the gut, potentially altering microbial composition and overall metabolism. Supplementing with B vitamins may be beneficial for. supporting your gut health and microbial balance.
But beware: all B-vitamins are not made equal. In my practice, I urge my patients to consider one of my personal favorites. Methylated B-complex supplements are crucial because they contain bioavailable forms of B vitamins, such as methylcobalamin and methylfolate, which the body can readily utilize. This is particularly significant for individuals with certain genetic variations that impair their ability to convert standard B vitamins into their active forms. Methylated B-complex aids in various bodily functions including energy production, DNA synthesis, nerve function, and mood regulation. Incorporating B vitamin-rich foods or supplements into your diet can help maintain a healthy gut microbiome, promoting overall well-being and metabolic health. When it comes to memory and menopause, sage is one of my favorite natural remedies. Sage is said to clear the mind and improve memory. In fact, there may be a link between the herb and the mind. Researchers have shown that the essential oil of Salvia officinalis inhibits acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme targeted by Alzheimer’s drugs. Animal studies and human trials suggest sage may improve mood and cognition in both healthy adults and those with Alzheimer’s dementia. Germany’s health authorities approve the use of sage as a treatment for excessive sweating based on traditional use and human studies. Sage may also have weak estrogenic properties, which may explain why it has been used to relieve night sweats in menopause. An 8-week study found that 1 gram of fresh sage was superior to placebo for relieving night sweats. Sage is often included in combination with other herbs to relieve hot flashes and night sweats, and to improve memory and mood. Sage boasts a variety of acidic compounds, each doubling as antioxidants. Among these are chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, ellagic acid, and rutin, each associated with a range of health benefits. Studies suggest they may aid in:
