A Simple Solution to Headaches and Migraines

Your weekly housecall filled with everything you need to know to live longer and live betternaturally. Missed an issue or want to forward to a friend? Find it all right here.

Hello there, friend!

Nothing can disrupt my day more than a headache or migraine. While there are many treatment options available, one often overlooked remedy is the simple act of drinking water.

How Dehydration Triggers Headaches

Dehydration happens when your body loses more fluids than it takes in, leading to various symptoms, including headaches. When your body is dehydrated, the brain can temporarily shrink due to fluid loss, causing it to pull away from the skull and activate pain receptors. Even mild dehydration can result in headaches.

The Role of Hydration in Migraines

Migraines are more intense than regular headaches and can be extremely debilitating. Studies suggest that dehydration is a common trigger for migraines. A lack of fluids can disturb the body’s electrolyte balance, which is crucial for proper nerve and muscle function. This imbalance can bring on migraine symptoms.

Scientific Findings

Research supports the connection between hydration and headache relief. One study showed that increasing water intake reduced the frequency and severity of headaches and migraines. Another study found that staying well-hydrated helps maintain stable blood pressure and blood volume, reducing the likelihood of migraines.

Tips for Staying Hydrated

  • Drink Regularly: Aim for at least 8 glasses of water daily, adjusting for activity level and climate.
  • Track Your Intake: Use a marked water bottle to monitor your daily water consumption.
  • Eat Hydrating Foods: Include water-rich fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, oranges, and watermelon in your meals.
  • Set Reminders: Use apps or alarms to prompt you to drink water throughout the day.

A favorite way I like to stay hydrated is through fruit-infused water.

Drinking fruit-infused water adds a refreshing twist to staying hydrated by enhancing the flavor of plain water, making it more enjoyable to drink throughout the day. The natural sweetness and nutrients from fruits like citrus, berries, and herbs provide an extra boost of vitamins and antioxidants while encouraging more water intake. Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining energy levels, supporting digestion, and keeping skin healthy. By infusing water with fruits, you’re not only increasing your fluid intake but also benefiting from the added nutrients that promote overall wellness.

My newest eBook, Fruit Fusion: Refreshing Recipes for Ultimate Hydration, is packed with vibrant, easy-to-make fruit-infused water recipes that will transform the way you stay hydrated.

Inside this ebook, you’ll discover simple yet creative recipes that will:

  • Enhance your hydration with delightful flavor combinations.
  • Provide a daily boost of vitamins and antioxidants.
  • Spark your culinary creativity with fresh, fun ideas.

Although managing headaches and migraines can be challenging, staying hydrated is a simple and effective way to reduce their impact. By making a conscious effort to drink more water, you can decrease the frequency and severity.

Water isn’t the only way to hydrate! Apples are a delicious snack and work wonderfully in desserts—like a classic apple pie. But they’re also an ideal snack for increased hydration as they’re comprised of about 85 percent water. Eat them whole or add them to your favorite salad. I love this sheet pan pork with fennel and apples – especially around Fall!
