Mindset Mastery: Change Your Story

Hello friend,

Have you ever met a person who’s really good at telling stories? I once had a co-worker who was that person and there was one particular story she loved to tell about her husband that really was quite funny. Each time she told the story she’d emphasize certain parts that were sure to get a laugh. She paused at all the right places, fast forwarded at others, and always animated the final punch line.

But as funny as the story was initially, there came a point where it just wasn’t funny anymore. In fact, it felt sad and even a bit embarrassing. What was worse is that she never stopped telling the story even though most of us had heard it at least a thousand times.

Most of us are just like my old co-worker, we love telling our stories—exciting events that happen in our lives, life lessons that help us grow.

But there are other stories that never get shared with anyone else—the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, what we’re capable of, what we believe and how we see the world.

The Three Most Powerful Stories

I Can’t.

Lack and incapability is the most common story we tell ourselves everyday without ever having a bit of evidence to prove it true. “I can’t ____” and “I don’t have ____” has killed more dreams than trying and failing ever could. If you were a child who was heavily criticized or your efforts throughout life have always been one-upped by others, it’s likely this story is one you’ve learned to avoid disappointment, imperfection or punishment from failure. It may sound like “How are you going to start a business without a degree?” or “as soon as I get past ____ then I will ____.”

I’m Not Worthy.

This is a story that plagues so many of us that it breaks my heart. It’s the voice of the harsh inner critic, constantly bombarding us with insults and language that we would never, in a million years, say to someone else. It may sound like “Here you go again with another idea, when you didn’t even finish the last project you started” or “That’s too much to pay for that” despite it being very easy for you to spend the same amount of money to please someone else. Beneath every struggle to give ourselves permission to have what we rightfully deserve is the voice of unworthiness rearing its ugly head.

Life is Unfair.

The voice of the victim seals the deal for the inner critic. By keeping us focused on outward circumstances beyond our control, we miss the opportunity to look inward at what we can control. We’ve all had our share of ups and downs and maybe even stretches of time that felt more down than up. But when look at our lives in totality we can find evidence that more often than not life really is on our side, working for us, not against us. Left unchecked, this is where anxiety and depression kicks in; where you’re always looking around corners and imagining worst-case scenarios, which are easily triggered by everyday life. This story gives you some control by telling you that your best defense is to always expect the worst.
