Hey there, friend!
Happy New Year!
I hope your holidays were peace-filled and that your new year is off to a healthy and happy start!
Each year during my annual physical, I like to get a baseline on my iron levels. Why? Studies have shown that low iron levels, also known as anemia, is a very commonly missed health issue for women, The CDC recommends a blood test for anemia every five to 10 years for women of reproductive age. Ferritin’s Important Role
Ferritin, a naturally occurring protein in the blood, plays a pivotal role in supporting the creation of red blood cells, responsible for oxygen transport throughout your body. Iron levels vary from person to person.
Certain individuals face a higher likelihood of developing low ferritin levels, prompting the need for regular testing. Those at risk include underweight individuals, pregnant women, those with heavy menstrual periods, and individuals with digestive issues preventing proper nutrient absorption, such as inflammatory bowel disease.
It’s crucial to note that a low ferritin reading does not necessarily mean you have low iron levels. Ferritin stores excess iron, so while low iron leads to low ferritin, the reverse is not always true. A blood test is used to confirm low ferritin levels.

Recognizing Low Ferritin Symptoms
Symptoms to be on the lookout for if you suspect you may have low ferritin levels include:
- Paler-than-usual skin
- Nervousness, jitteriness
- Difficulty focusing
- Muscle weakness
- Unexplained fatigue
- Dizziness
- Rapid heartbeat
- Unusual shortness of breath may manifest
Many health issues can contribute to low ferritin levels, ranging from conditions preventing proper iron absorption to blood loss related to digestive tract problems.
Low Ferritin vs. Low Iron
Understanding the distinction between low ferritin and low iron is crucial. Hemoglobin, a component of red blood cells, relies on iron to be produced. Ferritin stores extra iron, but insufficient iron intake forces the body to use ferritin-stored iron for hemoglobin production. Low ferritin can lead to iron deficiency, eventually causing anemia characterized by low hemoglobin levels.
Naturally Boosting Your Ferritin Levels
If diagnosed with low ferritin, there are natural ways to enhance iron stores. Iron supplements and incorporating iron-rich foods into your diet, such as beans, tofu, beef, dried fruit, cashews, lentils, kale, pistachios, soybeans, peas, and broccoli, can provide a nutritional boost to elevate your ferritin levels.
