Mindset Mastery: Spotting GLIMMERS

Mindset Mastery: Spotting GLIMMERS

Hello friend,

Recently, I had the kind of week that I wish I could put in a bottle. You know the kind that are sprinkled with just the right amount of goodness that you never seem to notice what isn’t? That was my week.

It started out on a Monday with a brisk morning walk in my community. Though it was a bit chilly, the crisp blue sky and morning sunrise was enough to convince me to just put on an extra layer, grab my scarf and running shoes, and make it happen. There’s something about this time of year and the slow return to daylight that fuels me with so much excitement. Though I haven’t refined my bird identification skills, the colorful variation of wildlife swooping down to the ground, pecking here and there, then taking flight again was a feast for my eyes.

Next it was a conversation I had in the produce aisle of my local food market. As I was looking through the selection of culinary herbs an elderly gentleman next to me said, “I always wanted to know what you do with that.” He was asking about the rosemary I had in my hand.

“Oh, this is rosemary,” I said excitedly. “It’s delicious. And it’s really healthy, too,” I added. In the next ten minutes I explained to him that rosemary is great for the brain, good for concentration, mood, and even sleep. I showed him how to add just a few sprigs of rosemary to the chicken breasts he had in his basket and walked him over to the next aisle for a small bottle of olive oil. I explained the heart and brain health benefits of that, too.

“Well, thank you Miss,” he smiled. “This just made my day. Can’t wait to get home and taste it. Try out something new,” he said.

Little did he know, he’d actually made my day. Helping people live healthier lives is what I do and any opportunity I get to talk about herbs – growing them, cooking with them, healing with them – is an automatic win.

The rest of the week was filled with simple, random joys: my favorite barista at the local coffeeshop who always greets me with a beautiful smile and always adds the precise amount of caramel in my macchiato; an unplanned stop at a unique home furnishings store where I found the exact buffet table that for years I have been searching for; the perfect rosemary and garlic potatoes for dinner.

A week filled with GLIMMERS.

.

What I hope you will remember this week is that your life is filled with GLIMMERS, too.

There is a breathtaking sunrise about to happen that will never occur again.

There is a person who loves you and is just waiting for you to put down your phone so they can show you.

There is a book that you were once so excited about still sitting on your shelf ready for you to choose.

There is a hobby you once loved, that you did just for the sheer fun of it, waiting for you to do it again.

For Your Practice:

Glimmers are what allow us to meet our lives with joy and gratitude. They help us to become active participants in creating the kind of life we want to live. Once we train our brains to find them, they show up more and more.

If you are exhausted by constant worries and negative thoughts that keep circulating in your mind and want to get better at spotting more GLIMMERS here are a few journal prompts to get you started:

  1. Sensory Exploration: Take a few moments to engage your senses fully. Close your eyes and focus on one specific sensation around you—perhaps the feeling of warmth from sunlight, the sound of birds chirping, or the taste of a favorite food. Describe this sensory experience in detail, paying attention to the subtle nuances. Reflect on how tuning into these sensory details brings a sense of joy and presence to your moment. Consider incorporating more mindful awareness of your senses into your daily routine.
  2. Moments of Stillness: Identify a moment of stillness or quiet in your day. It could be a brief pause between tasks, a quiet morning, or a peaceful evening. Reflect on how these moments make you feel and explore the simple joys within them. What thoughts or emotions arise during these times of stillness? Consider how incorporating intentional moments of quiet reflection into your routine can enhance your overall sense of well-being and mindfulness.
  3. Gratitude Walk: Take a short walk in a familiar environment, paying close attention to your surroundings. As you walk, intentionally notice and appreciate the simple joys around you—whether it’s the beauty of nature, the warmth of the sun, or the kindness of a passing stranger. Write down at least three things you feel grateful for during your walk and reflect on how this practice of gratitude enhances your awareness and connection to the present moment.

Remember that when it comes to your personal journal practice you don’t need perfect sentences nor perfect punctuation. You can scribble, erase, cross out and be as messy as you’d like. Your journal is for you.

If the very idea of having time to yourself this year to renew, refresh, and reinvent a life of joy, gratitude and GLIMMERS sounds like exactly what you want and need I invite you to join me in September for my second annual Design The Life You Deserve retreat.
