Welcome to National Women’s Health Week, a celebration of you and your well-being! Prioritizing your health is essential for living a full, thriving life. To celebrate, I’ve put together five ideas to nourish your body, mind, and soul during this special week.

  1. Health Check-In: While self-diagnosing on the internet can be tempting, nothing beats a thorough check-up with your healthcare provider. Schedule your annual visit to ensure everything is in tip-top shape and catch any potential issues early on. Even if your insurance doesn’t cover a test or two, your health is worth the investment!
  2. Nourish Your Body: Fueling your body with nutritious food is a form of self-love. Take a moment to assess your eating habits—are you giving your body the nutrients it needs to flourish? Explore exciting recipes, invite loved ones to cook with you, and savor every bite. Eating well doesn’t have to be bland or boring!
  3. Get Moving: Exercise isn’t just about burning calories; it’s about feeling strong and vibrant. Find activities that bring you joy, whether it’s dancing, hiking, or yoga. May 19th is Bike to Work Day. Consider dusting off your bike and riding to work, or just get out on your bike to explore new areas. Set achievable goals, enlist a workout buddy for accountability, and remember to include strength training to stay balanced and prevent injuries.
  4. Feed Your Brain: As women, we often juggle multiple roles, which can take a toll on our mental health. Take time each day for self-care practices like meditation, journaling, or therapy. Cultivate gratitude and self-compassion, and remember that it’s okay to prioritize your mental well-being.
  5. Find Your Calm: In a hectic world, finding moments of peace is vital. Prioritize restorative activities like getting enough sleep and spending time in nature. Embrace the tranquility of a leisurely walk, a soothing hike, or simply basking in the beauty of the outdoors.

National Women’s Health Week is a reminder to prioritize yourself because when you’re at your best, everyone around you benefits.

Research + News You Can Use: Breast Cancer Screening Should Begin at Age 40, US Panel Says

Women at average risk for breast cancer should get screening mammograms every other year starting at age 40, according to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). The USPSTF’s influential recommendation, published in JAMA, reverses its controversial 2009 guidance that breast cancer screening should begin at age 50.

Its updated guidelines bring it in line with other major organizations that say women at average risk of breast cancer should start screening at age 40. Black women, in particular, stand to benefit from earlier screening, experts say. Breast cancer mortality is 40% higher among Black women than among white women, and Black women are more likely to get breast cancer at younger ages, the USPSTF report noted.
