Eating Your Sunscreen? Protect Your Skin from the Inside Out!

Hello there, friend!

As summer approaches and the days get longer, I’m reminding all of my patients about the importance of skin health. May 27th is National Sunscreen Protection Day, but before you wait for that first beach day, let’s rethink how we approach sun protection.

Gone are the days of slathering on sunscreen full of questionable ingredients. Instead, I’ve found a new way to bask in the sun safely—by nourishing my skin from the inside out.

The sun isn’t our enemy. It offers many health benefits when enjoyed responsibly. Contrary to popular belief, sunscreen alone isn’t the answer to preventing skin cancer. Research suggests that in moderation, sun exposure can promote overall well-being.

In a world where skin cancer rates continue to rise despite increased sunscreen use, it’s time to shift our perspective. A 2016 study highlighted the numerous health benefits of sun exposure, advocating for a balanced approach that includes achieving optimal vitamin D levels.

So, how do we embrace the sun while keeping our skin safe? It starts with a holistic approach to wellness.

Here’s my tried-and-tested regimen for preparing my skin for safe sun exposure:

  1. Nourish from Within: Adopt an anti-inflammatory diet rich in healthy fats, omega-3s, and antioxidant-rich foods like leafy greens and berries. Limit processed foods and opt for whole, nutrient-dense choices.
  2. Harness the Power of Antioxidants: Load up on foods and supplements rich in antioxidants to combat inflammation and free radicals. Think berries, dark chocolate, and vitamin C supplements.
  3. Boost Your Vitamin D: Maintain optimal vitamin D levels through sun exposure and supplementation. Remember, adequate vitamin D is essential for overall health and skin protection so be sure to get your vitamin D levels checked regularly.
  4. Ease into Sun Exposure: Gradually expose your skin to sunlight to build tolerance without risking sunburn. Start slowly and increase exposure over time, always mindful of your skin’s limits.
  5. Embrace Natural Sun Protection: Opt for natural sun protection methods like hats and clothing to shield your skin from excess sun exposure.
  6. Supplement Smart: Support your skin with targeted supplements like vitamin D3, omega-3s, and astaxanthin to reduce inflammation and enhance sun tolerance.
  7. Ditch the EDCs: EDCs are chemicals or mixtures of chemicals that interfere with the way the body’s hormones work. Some EDCs act like “hormone mimics” and trick our body into thinking that they are hormones, while other EDCs block natural hormones from doing their job. Many popular beauty products are loaded with toxic EDCs. Read more about them here.

The supplements I recommend are:

  • Vitamin D3
  • Vitamin C
  • Omega-3s and Krill oil
  • Astaxanthin – this antioxidant has been shown to act as an internal sunscreen

By nourishing our bodies from within and adopting sun-safe practices, we can enjoy the summer sun without compromising our skin’s health.

One in 3 Women With Migraines Say Attacks Occur During Periods

Among U.S. women with migraine, a third say the attacks tend to coincide with their periods, a new survey finds.

Migraines that occur during menstruation are often frequent and severe, but only about one in five respondents said they used medications aimed at preventing the headaches.

“If you have migraines related to your menstrual cycle, discuss this with your gynecologist or neurologist. There are treatments that can help and if the first treatment tried does not work, do not give up,” said study lead author Dr. Jessica Ailani.
