Understanding NeuroWellness & Love

Dopamine is one of the neurotransmitters in your body, and it plays a major role in how your body manages motivation, pleasure, and reward. When dopamine is released after engaging in a particular activity, we feel emotions of pleasure and reward so the next time we intend on doing that activity, our memories of feeling good come to the surface. We’re more motivated to engage in the activity again.

When we think about relationships, we often think of those that are pleasurable for us. If pleasure wasn’t part of our relationships that we enjoy, there would be little motivation to be in them. Studies have shown that when we fall in love, dopamine levels are running rampant in our bodies. As the ‘newness’ of the relationship goes away, our dopamine levels drop.

So, what do we do when dopamine drops off in our relationships?

In long-term relationships, those feelings don’t always wear off. Studies have shown that when shown pictures of those we love, our dopamine pathways light up, just as if we were newly in love. To keep those feelings going, trying new and exciting activities with our loved ones can help increase relationship satisfaction and positive feelings about that relationship.

Ensuring that dopamine levels are optimal is another important piece of the puzzle for maintaining healthy relationships, too! Consider getting a neurotransmitter and adrenal hormone assessment if you feel that you just aren’t feeling that ‘spark’.

If you’re ready to begin improving your health from the inside out, having your neuroendocrine system checked is a great place to start.
