Estrogen dominance

Estrogen dominance? Here are the signs and what you can do today.

Have you heard of estrogen dominance and why it’s so important for women and men?

Estrogen is a term used to describe a group of three hormones produced by the body: estrone, estradiol, and estriol. Estradiol, which is produced and released by the ovaries, is considered the estrogen with the most impact on mood and behavior. However, the estrogens can also be synthesized in the brain by the conversion of testosterone. Estradiol receptors are found throughout the entire body, even in bones.

Estrogen dominance is a condition where estrogen levels rise, typically during peri-menopause and menopause, which is no longer matched by sufficient progesterone.

Why causes estrogen dominance?

Here’s the simple science: either your body is making too much estrogen (more than is necessary) or it isn’t breaking down estrogen properly and removing it effectively.

Some of the main causes of overproduction of estrogen include:

  • Excess body weight
  • Chronic mental or physical stress
  • Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in common household and beauty products
  • Certain medications such as oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies
  • Liver dysfunction

A few signs of estrogen dominance in men and women include:

  • Nervous tension
  • Mood disturbances, such as depression and anxiety
  • Hair thinning or loss
  • Increased PMS symptoms
  • Low libido
  • Bloating
  • Weight gain
  • Poor sleep or insomnia

Healthy levels of estrogen are necessary to help maintain an optimal mood and regulate behavior, as estrogen stimulates increased dopamine and serotonin receptors in certain parts of the brain.

Depression is associated with a decrease in estrogen levels, and synthetic estrogen was once used as a treatment protocol for depressed, menopausal women. However, synthetic estrogen has been linked to osteoporosis, poor heart health, and cognitive impairments.

How Can You Reverse Estrogen Dominance?

Hormone imbalances, including estrogen dominance, require working with a practitioner familiar with neuroendocrine biomarker testing, bio-identical hormone therapy, nutritional supplements, and patience.

While getting tested you can also work with a health coach to help you:

  • Gain skills to cope with your stress
  • Incorporate more Omega-rich healthy fats into your meal plan
  • Eliminate endocrine disrupting chemicals in toxic products
  • Improve your sleep hygiene and the quality of your sleep
  • Create a lifestyle routine that can help you sustain healthy habits
  • Incorporate stress-relieving adaptogens and herbs that nourish and protect your liver for proper methylation and detoxification
