Now that it’s February, we all know it’s time to get serious about our goals. But does any of this sound familiar?

You want to start a new workout routine, so you spend three weeks researching the “perfect” split. You want to meal prep, so you wait until you have the “perfect” glass containers and a free Sunday afternoon. You want to get organized, so you spend half a year looking for the perfect closet system.

We’ve all been there—myself included. We tell ourselves we’re being diligent by doing our research, but usually, we’re just hiding.

We are choosing the Theory Stack. It’s what we learn from thinking about doing but not actually doing.

Why Your “Mistake Stack” is Your Greatest Asset

Mistakes are our greatest teachers. Look at the height of the third stack stack of books. Fifteen books. That is the volume of wisdom available to you only when things go wrong and you have the opportunity to stop, drop, and course-correct for future success.

Here is why the perfectionist mindset actually slows down your mastery:

  • Theory is a Map; Mistakes are the Terrain: You can study the “best” way to squat for hours, but you don’t actually learn your own body’s mechanics until you lose your balance and have to adjust.

  • The “Error-Correction” Loop: Neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to change and learn—is actually triggered by errors. When you make a mistake, your brain receives a chemical signal to pay closer attention. Not making mistakes? Not getting signals.

  • Resilience is a Muscle: If you only start when conditions are perfect, you have zero “bad weather” experience. The person who has messed up 50 times knows how to recover. The person with the perfect record is just one trip-up away from quitting forever.

The Saboteur: Reframing the “Failed” Effort

If you tried to meal prep and ended up with burnt chicken and a messy kitchen, you didn’t “fail” at meal prepping. You just added two books to your Mistake Stack. You now know exactly what temperature is too high and how much time you actually need.

If you tried to exercise after work and wound up forgetting your gym bag and going home instead, you didn’t “fail” at exercise. You just added three books to your Mistake Stack. You know exactly why you need to pack the night before, what you need to pack and how much time you actually need to pack it.

Perfection is a plateau. Mistakes are the ladder.

The Mastery Mindset Shift: Stop asking, “How can I do this perfectly?” and start asking, “How quickly can I get through my first ten mistakes?”

This Week’s Mastery: Putting it into Practice

This week, I challenge you to find one area where you’ve been “waiting for the right time.”

I’ll go first! Here I am being very imperfect in Pilates class—something I’ve always wanted to try out!

  • Don’t wait for the perfect gym clothes; do squats for 10-minutes in your pajamas if you have to.

  • Don’t wait for the perfect recipe; cook something simple and see what happens.

Build your stack. The height of your success is built on the volume of your “oops” moments.
