17 Feb Mindset Mastery: Cultivating Joy
This weekend I reached out to a few close friends to see how their new year is unfolding. With life moving at a speed that’s often hard to keep up with, I’ve decided to make connecting with those I love a top priority. The wisdom that one friend shared with me about cultivating joy has stayed on my mind and made me think about this quote that I keep on my Inspiration Wall: don’t let your happiness be controlled by something you can’t control.
It’s no secret that the world is ablaze right now with a never-ending cycle of sad news—natural disasters, political disasters—some days, it’s hard to be optimistic and future-forward in our thinking.
But like my friend, I’ve decided to make the pursuit of joy my number one priority—not through grand gestures, and not necessarily through actions that would make headlines, but through small, intentional shifts that begin with my own mindset.
Joy Is Your Birthright
I believe joy is our birthright—not something we have to earn, ask for, or prove we deserve. But joy doesn’t simply arrive at our doorstep. It’s something we have to pursue with intention—earnestly, fearlessly, and unapologetically.
Life has taught me that that while I may not have control over global events, I do have control over how I show up each day. I can choose where I place my focus, how I interpret the world around me, and the energy I bring into my relationships, my work, and my own heart.
It’s easy to feel powerless when the world feels chaotic, but true power lies in our daily choices—the small, mindful acts that anchor us in joy and hope. It might be as simple as savoring a quiet cup of tea, setting an intention before stepping into the day, or offering a kind word to someone who needs it. It might be scheduling the trip you’ve always wanted to take or pursuing the new hobby you’ve always wanted to learn. Either way, it’s about the hope that comes from knowing that happiness is within your control.
For Your Practice:
This week, I invite you to ask yourself: Where can I create joy in my own life, right now? How can I shift my mindset—not by denying the reality of the world but by choosing to nurture moments of light within it?
Keep exploring this theme with these two additional prompts:
- When faced with uncertainty or negativity, how can I reframe my thoughts to stay grounded in joy? Reflect on a recent challenge and explore how shifting your mindset could change your experience.
- Who or what in my life consistently brings me joy, and how can I intentionally nurture that connection? Reflect on the people, places, or activities that uplift you, and choose one way to deepen your engagement with them this week.
Mindset Mastery Action Step:
The only thing better than hope during hard times is a plan.

Remember, cultivating joy isn’t something that just happens to us—it’s something we cultivate, one thought, one action, and one mindset shift at a time.
